Dear Friends,
The Crushing is finished for
the year!
It is great to be at this point in
the year but it is also a little anticlimactic. We had some crazy
days, some new faces show up in the middle of the season, some familiar
faces leave and all throughout, the process of winemaking never stopped.
The varieties that we brought into the cellar were Merlot, Petit Verdot,
Tannat, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tinta Cau, and Chambourcin
along with lots of Raspberries and pears. The wineries that have some
of their wine here are Furnace Mountain, Hiddencroft, Notaviva, and
North Gate. Although these names may not be recognizable yet, they
will be in the next year or two. Keep your eyes open for these as
they are getting a great start in our little homemade nursery for
wine. Among all of this fruit, we brought in Cabernet Franc from 6
different vineyards. I look forward to tasting these wines with others
so we can compare and learn more about the wines, the growing and
what makes them taste different.
Holiday Time is Here Again
It seems that the Christmas decorations are always up before
the last grape is off the vine. And so it goes. This year we will
be camping out at Mom’s Pie Shops in both Leesburg and Warrenton
before Thanksgiving. This is a great chance for you to buy your wine
and pie at the same time. If you are shopping online, go to www.momsapplepieco.com
to get those fresh bake goods for Thanksgiving.
Also, we will have our Holiday
Open House on December 1 and 2 at the winery. We are offering
a special price of 20% off of all cases, any mix.
We are doing this for the simple reason that many of you already share
our wines with friends and family. This will give all of you a chance
to do that with us sharing a little bit of the cost. The spirit of
this business has been built around making great wine and sharing
it with others. We need to pay our bills, staff and make a living
but we are not looking to trade in the Toyota for a Ferrari (OK, maybe
Matt is looking for that). We hope you stop out to take advantage
of this offer, as this is a rare thing from us.
Green Friday It is really great to see an idea come
to fruition. The concept of Green Friday was not my idea even though
I did carry the idea for a while to keep it alive. Melissa Piper Nelson
from the Loudoun County Department of Economic Development inherited
the idea and has brought it to a point of action for this year. On
Friday November 23rd at the Lucketts Store from 10am to 3pm, there
will be a market area set up with local growers, producers and artisans
to sell gift type products to the holiday shoppers. In addition to
this, there will be other stores in the county featuring local products
and crafts to shoppers this holiday season. For more information on
locations and participants, visit www.loudounfarms.org.
Newsletter Upgrade After
producing twice as much wine as last year, we need some bigger tools
to help do the rest of the work around here. Our newsletter program
has been upgraded to send more newsletters at once and to have some
better links. The Old Town Crier column that I write is available
through the link on the right column along with the list of events.
We are also in the process of reorganizing the website to provide
more links and information.
What is the next upgrade? We
did upgrade the bottle for the 2006 Tre Sorelle and the Port Wines
are the next efforts to create a package for. We are just finishing
a large shed to keep the equipment out of the rain and snow. We hired
Ryan Henderson to continue the multitasking jobs of carpentry, farming,
production and sales, which he did as our intern. He is free to work
with us until he is sick of my kids and cats or he gets a better boss,
whichever comes first. We are going to continue with the Friday and
Saturday tastings at the winery through the winter. We will keep you
informed and hope to see you all soon. Thanks so much for supporting
us and making what we love to do a part of what you love to do.
